Wake up with puffy, dull or tired-looking skin? Facial dry brushing could be the 60-second ritual missing from your skincare routine.
Using an ultra-soft brush and feather-light strokes, facial dry brushing combines gentle surface exfoliation with facial massage to leave skin feeling smoother, fresher and more awake — before you've even applied your skincare.
But when it comes to your face, softer is better. The brush you choose, the pressure you use and how often you brush all matter.
Here’s how facial dry brushing works, what it can do for your skin and how to introduce it safely into your routine.
What is facial dry brushing?
Facial dry brushing involves gently sweeping a soft brush over clean, completely dry skin — without water, cleanser or facial oil.
It combines two simple skincare techniques: gentle physical exfoliation and facial massage.
The ultra-soft bristles help lift away loose, dead surface skin cells while the brushing action provides a light massage across the face and neck.
The important word is gentle.
Facial dry brushing should never feel like scrubbing. The bristles should skim across your skin using feather-light pressure.
What are the benefits of facial dry brushing?
1. Helps reduce the appearance of puffiness
If your face tends to look puffy when you wake up, gentle facial massage can help leave it looking fresher and more awake.
This is one of the reasons we love facial dry brushing as a morning ritual.
2. Gently buffs away dull, dry surface skin
Dead surface skin cells can contribute to a complexion looking dull or feeling rough.
The soft bristles provide gentle physical exfoliation, helping to sweep away loose surface cells without the vigorous scrubbing you might associate with a traditional body brush.
3. Leaves skin feeling smoother and refreshed
After brushing, skin can feel smoother and refreshed — creating a beautiful canvas for the serum, facial oil or moisturiser that follows.
4. It's simple
No facial oil. No water. No complicated technique.
Start with around 2-3 minutes, two to three times a week, and adjust according to how your skin responds.
Consistency and a light touch are more important than pressure.
Does facial dry brushing help with puffiness?
Facial puffiness can have many causes, and dry brushing isn't a treatment for an underlying medical condition.
What it does provide is gentle facial massage. Used with light, directional strokes, this can help your face look and feel refreshed — particularly as part of your morning routine.
The key is not to press harder.
Think skim, not scrub.
How to dry brush your face
Start with a clean brush and freshly cleansed, completely dry skin.
The number-one rule is:
Use feather-light pressure.
The tips of the bristles should barely skim your skin.
- Begin at your neck. Gently sweep from below your ears down the sides of your neck towards your collarbones.
- Move along your jawline. Brush from the centre of your chin outwards towards your ears using short, light strokes.
- Sweep across your cheeks. Start beside your nose and work gently outwards towards your ears. Avoid the delicate eye area.
- Brush your forehead. Move from the centre of your forehead outwards towards your temples.
- Finish at your neck. Complete your ritual with a few soft downward sweeps towards your collarbones.
Then follow with your usual Black Chicken Remedies serum, facial oil or moisturiser.
Avoid active breakouts and broken, sunburnt, inflamed or irritated skin. Stop if you experience discomfort or irritation.
How often should you dry brush your face?
With the Garshana Soft Face Brush, we recommend starting with around 60 seconds, two to three times per week.
Your skin should always guide you.
If you already use exfoliating acids, retinoids, facial scrubs or other exfoliating products, take those into account before adding another form of exfoliation.
More is not necessarily better. Over-exfoliation can leave skin irritated, dry or red.
Is facial dry brushing suitable for sensitive skin?
The face needs a very different brush from the body.
The Garshana Soft Face Brush has ultra-soft synthetic nylon fibre bristles specifically chosen for delicate facial skin.
But physical exfoliation won't suit everyone, even with a very soft brush.
If your skin is particularly sensitive, very dry, reactive, acne-prone or you have an existing skin condition, introduce facial brushing cautiously or seek personalised advice first.
Your skin should never feel sore after brushing.
Can you use a body dry brush on your face?
No.
A body dry brush is designed for the thicker skin on your body and may be far too firm for facial skin.
Our Garshana Dry Body Brush is intentionally firmer and more invigorating.
The Garshana Soft Face Brush was created specifically for the face, with much softer bristles and a feather-light brushing technique.
Facial dry brushing vs gua sha: what's the difference?
Both can be used as part of a facial massage ritual, but they're quite different.
Gua sha generally involves gliding a smooth tool across the skin and is commonly used with a facial oil or serum to provide slip.
Facial dry brushing uses ultra-soft bristles on clean, completely dry skin — so there's no oil or product required during the brushing step.
If you like a quick, uncomplicated ritual before applying your skincare, facial dry brushing is particularly easy to incorporate.
You don't necessarily need to choose between them. They're simply different techniques, and the best ritual is the one that suits your skin and that you'll actually enjoy using.
How to choose a facial dry brush
Softness matters.
Look for a brush specifically designed for facial skin, with soft, flexible bristles and a shape that allows you to control the pressure easily.
A facial brush shouldn't scratch or drag.
Our Garshana Soft Face Brush was created as the softer side of our much-loved Garshana body-brushing ritual.
Inspired by the Ayurvedic tradition of Garshana, it uses ultra-soft synthetic nylon fibre bristles to provide gentle surface exfoliation and facial massage.
It's also vegan, with no animal hair.
Where does facial dry brushing fit in your skincare routine?
Keep it simple:
CLEANSE → DRY → BRUSH → TREAT → MOISTURISE
Start with your usual cleanser, such as Cleanse My Face, and remove it completely.
Allow your skin to dry.
Use your Garshana Soft Face Brush with feather-light pressure for around 60 seconds.
Then continue with your usual serum, facial oil and/or moisturiser.
Facial dry brushing FAQs
Should you dry brush your face wet or dry?
Dry. Use the Garshana Soft Face Brush on clean, completely dry skin without water, cleanser or facial oil.
Can I dry brush my face every day?
We recommend starting with two to three times per week rather than assuming more is better. Pay attention to how your skin responds, particularly if your routine already includes exfoliating products.
Will a facial dry brush scratch my skin?
A facial dry brush should be extremely soft and used with feather-light pressure. If brushing feels scratchy, uncomfortable or leaves your skin irritated, stop.
Can I use it around my eyes?
Avoid the delicate eye area.
Does facial dry brushing replace cleansing?
No. Facial dry brushing is an optional exfoliation and massage step. Cleanse first, allow your skin to dry completely and then brush.
Do I need to use an oil with it?
No. Unlike many facial massage techniques, the Garshana Soft Face Brush is designed to be used on completely dry skin. Apply your facial oil, serum or moisturiser afterwards.
