Talking to your child about body odour can feel surprisingly delicate.
You want to help them feel fresh and confident. You do not want them to feel embarrassed, teased or suddenly self-conscious about their body.
The good news is that the conversation does not need to be awkward. It just needs to be calm, practical and kind, especially if you are introducing their first deodorant or a new kids deodorant routine.
Start with normal
Body odour is a normal part of growing up. For some children, it can begin earlier than parents expect, sometimes before the more obvious signs of puberty.
So begin there.
Try:
Your body is starting to change, and that happens to everyone. One of the things we can do now is start using deodorant.
This frames deodorant as a normal hygiene step, not a problem with them.
Avoid making it a big announcement
Children can feel embarrassed if body odour is discussed in front of siblings, friends or extended family. Choose a private moment, ideally when neither of you is rushed.
A car conversation can work well because it feels less intense than sitting opposite each other. So can a bathroom or bedroom moment when you are already talking about getting ready.
Keep it short. If they want to ask questions, let them. If they shrug and move on, that is fine too.
Keep the language neutral
Try to avoid words that sound critical, like stinky or gross, even if you would normally use them jokingly. Children can be very sensitive at this stage.
Better phrases include:
Your shirt smells a bit sweaty after sport.
It might be time to add deodorant to your morning routine.
Let's find one you like.
The aim is to make deodorant feel as ordinary as brushing teeth.
Let them choose a deodorant they will actually use
Choice helps children feel more in control.
You might let them choose the scent, where they keep it, or whether they use it before school, after sport, or both. This matters because a first deodorant only works if they are happy to use it.
For tweens and teens, packaging matters too. A deodorant for tweens should feel fresh and age-appropriate, without making them feel like everyone at school can see they have entered a new stage.
Some children will love choosing a scent. Others will want the most low-key option possible. Follow their lead.
Show them how to use their first deodorant
Do not assume they know what to do. A quick demonstration can prevent overuse, underuse or spraying it onto clothes instead of skin.
Explain:
- Apply to clean, dry underarms.
- Use a small amount.
- Let it dry before getting dressed.
- Keep it in the bathroom, school bag or sports bag.
Then let the routine become normal.
What if they resist?
If your child says they do not want deodorant, try not to turn it into a battle.
You can say:
I understand. It can feel new. Let's just try it on school mornings or after sport and see how it feels.
If they are worried people will notice, choose packaging that does not look babyish or overly grown up. A product they feel comfortable owning is much more likely to be used.
